One of the most insightful and up-to-date articles I recently came across in the ASHRAE Journal is titled “Award of Engineering Excellence: Artificial Intelligence Transforms Shopping Mall”, published in March 2025.
This article explores a real-world project in which a shopping mall underwent an energy performance transformation by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in combination with retro-commissioning strategies. Initially, the systems were evaluated and their inefficiencies identified through a comprehensive retro-commissioning process. Following that, AI algorithms were implemented to optimize the control of HVAC systems, leading to significant energy savings.
From my perspective, this article highlights the tremendous value of integrating modern technologies like AI into mechanical systems management. In an era where energy efficiency and cost reduction are critical, adopting such data-driven, intelligent approaches can revolutionize how we manage and operate buildings. The article also underlines how real-time data and recalibration efforts contribute to a deeper understanding of system performance, allowing for more effective decision-making.
I highly recommend this article to engineers, facility managers, and energy consultants who are aiming to enhance building energy performance and explore innovative solutions.

One of the most fascinating case studies featured in the ASHRAE Journal – March 2025 is titled “Artificial Intelligence Transforms Shopping Mall.”
The article presents a project in Hong Kong where AI was used to re-commission an aging shopping center’s HVAC systems. By implementing AI-driven analytics, building operators optimized comfort settings, identified system inefficiencies, and significantly reduced energy costs—all while improving the customer experience.
My opinion:
This case illustrates how AI is no longer a futuristic concept but an actionable tool for real estate operators. Especially in commercial retail and mixed-use buildings, integrating intelligent control can increase tenant satisfaction and boost asset value. It’s a signal to developers and MEP engineers in the Middle East to think beyond traditional BMS and embrace adaptive, data-rich solutions.
I highly recommend this article to HVAC professionals, facility managers, and marketing strategists in the building automation space.
